Hip Replacement: Sulzer

Sulzer is the European
manufacturer of several types of hip replacements. The company is
based in Switzerland and they are listed on the NY stock exchange as
SM. A few of their current artificial hips are shown below:
Unfortunately, over 17,000 of Sulzer's
artificial hips were from lots contaminated with machine oil.
Approximately 90% of those contaminated artificial hips were put into
patients in the United States. Most patients affected by these
contaminated parts underwent surgery since October of 1999. Sulzer
has issued a recall for specific hip replacements, admitting that
some patients "may require medical intervention other than standard
postoperative monitoring." The specific artificial hip in the recall
is called the Inter-Op shell. It is a component of the artificial hip
that sets in the acetabulum. Please see photographs below:

Complications
from the defective hip replacements include severe pain and
loosening of the artificial hip. There have been reports of the hip
components coming apart, specifically a loosening of the artificial
hip. There have been reports of the hip components coming apart,
specifically a loosening of the ace tabular component. Patients who
have received a defective Sulzer hip replacement may be entitled to
monetary compensation. Depending on the facts of your case, this may
include compensation for medical care, payment of medical bills,
pain, loss of life's enjoyments, lost wages and other additional
compensation.
